October involved saying yes to major surgery, resisting the lure of complicating things, talking about ‘shameful’ subjects, and hosting a Halloween ‘comeback’ party.
“Sumptuous” is spot on. Banging opener and then, knowing the outcome, you spend the whole book on edge about how it all comes about. Brilliant. It was my first book of hers but will have to go in for more.
Hamnet has very similar vibes & structure. Honestly, I finished it and didn't think I liked it that much—I knew it was beautiful and brilliant, but I just didn't think it was "for me." And then I found I couldn't stop thinking about it for months afterward! Her writing has a way of sneaking up on you like that.
I also just finished The Marriage Portrait and loved it! O’Farrell’s writing is so sumptuous and her ability to build tension is masterful.
Best of luck with your surgery—and well done on finding the solution that works for you.

Good luck with your operation 🫶 I also loved Nobody Wants This.
Thanks so much, Ruth ❤️🥰
I hope your operation goes well, Natalie! 🤗
And what a wonderful update about how far your daughter has come! You are a great Mum.
Aw, thank you. This last year or so has put me through my paces!
